Histology of Graves' Disease – Low-power Fig. 17.23b Histology of thyroid tissue in Graves' disease. A low-power view of Graves' thyroid tissue showing a large lymphoid follicle with a well-formed germinal centre, immediately adjacent to which are hyperplastic thyroid follicles surrounded by a diffuse lymphoplasmacytic infiltrate. Further afield are partially suppressed thyroid follicles that are lined with tall cuboidal epithelium and contain colloid material showing the typical scalloping artefact. (Haematoxylin and eosin staining of a tissue section that is 5µm in thickness, taken from a routinely formalin-fixed and paraffin-embedded subtotal thyroidectomy specimen.)
